Recently, Microsoft released Windows*ML on Windows Developer Day, which allows developers to perform machine learning tasks in the Windows operating system. Windows ML enables efficient hardware utilization for any given artificial intelligence workload and intelligent workload distribution across different hardware types - including Intel's Vision Processing Units (VPUs). The Intel VPU is a chip designed to speed up marginal artificial intelligence workloads. Developers can use the VPU to build and deploy next-generation deep neural network applications on Windows clients.
The Intel Movidius(TM) Myriad(TM) X VPU is the industry's first system-on-chip with a dedicated neural computing engine for hardware acceleration of deep learning reasoning in front-end applications. Intel's third-generation VPUs are designed specifically for high-speed, low-power running deep neural networks, thereby alleviating the load of other hardware when performing specific artificial intelligence tasks.
Through the combination of Windows ML and Intel VPU, Microsoft can provide independent software vendors with specialized deep learning reasoning solutions that eliminate the need for additional workloads on legacy hardware and reduce overall system power consumption without custom code. The combination of Windows ML and Intel VPU can make client applications and core operating systems more intelligent, such as personal assistants, enhanced biometric security systems, smart music, photo search and recognition capabilities, and more.
