Intel and micronorth today, Intel and Mei Guang made a joint statement on the cooperation between the two sides on 3D Xpoint. Both sides will continue to cooperate to advance the research and development of the second generation 3D Xpoint storage technology, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2019 and manufactured in the Lehi factory. At the same time, after the second generation of 3D Xpoint storage technology, the two sides will pursue independent development in order to optimize the technology of their products and business needs.

The statement means that Intel and Mei Guang will officially break up in 2019 on the 3D Xpoint partnership.

In addition, in January this year, Intel and Mei Guang jointly announced that after the completion of the third generation 3D NAND Flash R & D, the two sides will open their R & D road.

It can be seen that in the near future, Intel and Mei Guang's cooperation in storage will also come to a full stop.

In fact, in terms of cooperation in storage, Intel and Mei Guang have always been a state of "masochism". Intel and Mei Guang's storage cooperation can be traced back to 2006, and both sides have worked together to build IM Flash Technologies (IMFT) and operate factories in Singapore and Utah. In 2010, the relationship between Mei Guang and Intel became tense. In 2012, Intel sold most of the shares of IM Flash plant to Mei Guang, leaving only the Lehi stronghold. In 2015, Intel and micron announced the launch of 3D XPoint.

For 3D Xpoint technology, Intel and Mei Guang have different brands. Intel calls it Optane, and Mei Guang calls it QuantX. Insiders have thought that after the breakup, Intel will launch Optane focused on personal computers, while QuantX of Mei Guang will focus on servers.

This is not the case. In May of this year, Intel officially launched Optane DC permanent memory for data center. It is reported that Optane DC Persistent Memory is currently sending samples, will be shipped later this year to specific customers, is expected to be widely applied in 2019. Intel wants to expand the server market with Optane, which seems to have moved the "cake" of Mei Guang, which may be an important reason for speeding up the two breakups.
