At the same time, the company said it would only choose UMC to cooperate because of the lack of Foundry facilities. To challenge such a single contract and stop sales is tantamount to letting the business stop.


Perhaps the root cause of the discussion in South Korea is the close technical cooperation between Unicom and Jinhua aimed at DRAM, and South Korea is worried about the threat posed to South Korea by "technology outflow" to China.

South Korea's doubts about the cooperation between Jeju Semiconductor and Unicom also show that South Korea is worried about the competition brought by the rapid development of China's storage industry.


South Korea's export growth rate will remain at 15.9% in the second half of the year, down sharply from 42.5% in the first half, according to a new study by the Korea Institute of Industry in August. It believes that the biggest reason for this problem is the rise of Chinese semiconductors. South Korean researchers said that "China is expected to start production of semiconductor memory early next year." Although there is a big technology gap between the two countries, the short-term impact on Korean enterprises is not great, but in the long run, it may have a negative impact on South Korea.


To a certain extent, this reflects the development of semiconductor in Korea. Today, South Korea is over-reliant on the semiconductor industry, and its industrial structure is unbalanced. Storage semiconductor accounts for more than 80% of the semiconductor industry. Although Samsung and SK Hynix made a lot of money in the DRAM boom, the two companies are clearly aware of the fact that storage is not going to last long and are making full use of the industry dividends brought about by the storage industry to expand their non-storage business.
